Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl during his pre-match Burnley press conference on Tuesday.
The German, who managed Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, was asked about his opinion on the 51-year-old, who led RB Leipzig to second and sixth-place finishes respectively in Germany’s top division before parting company with them at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
The Austrian had been out of work since then but has now taken the reins at the Premier League strugglers, who sacked Mark Hughes on Monday following a run of just one win 14 top flight matches this term.
What did Klopp say?
According to quotes reported by The Daily Echo, the 51-year-old said:
“Tall guy, a good guy as well.
“Very lively football, very aggressive, pressing, actually very lively approach I would say.
“A good guy and Southampton, how I heard it, is a nice city.
“It sounds like a win-win situation.”
How could his comments be interpreted?
Well, while Klopp clearly feels that Hasenhuttl is a good appointment for Southampton, his description of him within these quotes is surely not too far away from a description of himself.
It is clear that the Austrian has a similar brand and style of football to his at Liverpool, and the fact that he says it is a “win-win situation” more than suggests that he has huge respect for his new managerial rival – of course helped by the fact that he helped current Reds star Naby Keita become the star that he is during their time together at Leipzig.
While some Liverpool fans won’t ever want Klopp to leave it will happen eventually, and given the Merseyside outfit have shown that they aren’t afraid to prise players away from Saints, the German’s comments perhaps recommend their new boss could be next.
